Grandfathers are good listeners, good storytellers, and most importantly, good friends. Grandfathers are also often the source of sage advice, a benefit of their many years of experience. One thing is for sure, the love of a grandfather is a unique treasure that is never forgotten by their grandchildren. The times spent with a grandfather turn into precious memories that are conserved in the heart, even long after they have passed.
1. I’ll Miss You
It is not long ago
That you left my life
You flew away to heaven
To be with your children and wife
It all seems like a bad dream, one I cannot escape
It feels as if I am trapped in an unfamiliar place
I used to walk in the door and see you sitting there
A smile in your weak blue eyes
Silver in your hair
But then you started to get sick
Before I knew that was it
I tried my best not to cry
It’s too hard with a last goodbye
I sit and wonder even now
If you are up there looking down
Are you happy, are you sad?
Are you disappointed when I am bad?
I wish I could see you and have you here
My shining light to block my fear
But you are with me, this I know
For from my heart you will never go.
He was my life
He was my soul
He was my grandfather who had to go
He was ill with no cure
Whose heart gave up and wasn’t sure
Why he left me in this world
With no one to talk to
Not even to hold
Now that he’s gone
I sit here and cry
Waiting for him to say my last goodbye
I want him to know
I’ll be alright
That one day I’ll be by his side
Day by day
Year by year
I lived it like he was still here
With a smile on my face
I kiss his picture and put it in place
3. My Grampie
My love for my Grampie will always be alive
Although he is gone, his legacy will survive
In the things he taught me and love he would show
I am forever grateful, and it’s to him I owe
From the rain, to the dust, to the stars, and the sand
You will be among me daily, holding my hand
Your smile will always be etched in my mind
Another Grampie like you would be impossible to find
I know your trip of life was fulfilled and long
For that makes this easier and helps keep me strong
Your life was a blessing to all you knew
But I know you’re up there now, making your big debut
Greeting Grammy with big hug and a kiss
I know she’s been waiting, but it’s something I’ll miss
You know that I love you and you left too soon
But to me, you’ll always be the guy who hung the moon
4. Goodbye Pop
Pop was a man who would share and joke,
But for him everyone was a bleedin’ bloke.
His family made him so happy and proud,
Everyone he met he would tell them aloud.
You have left so many happy thoughts in my heart,
I am still finding it hard to believe we are now apart.
If I were given one wish what would it be?
It would be for you to be here for one more day with your family
I am heartbroken that you are no longer here.
When I think of you, I will always shed a tear.
People tell me in time the pain will stop,
But I will always miss the times I had with my dearest Pop,
And now it is time for us to say goodbye,
He will be looking down on us, wishing us not to cry,
But this I will say to Pop as a guarantee,
In our heart’s a memory, and there you’ll always be.
5. Goodbye, Grandad
the clock is ticking
and time is passing by
I love him very much
and this is my goodbye
he put on his brave face
told me there was nothing wrong
he thought I never knew
but I knew it all along
he was diagnosed with cancer
it made me really sad
I knew he was unwell
but didn’t think it was this bad
he used to sort it out
when things got really bad
now I just want to say
“I love you, Grandad”
6. Hi, Grandpa
I wish that here you could’ve stayed,
But God and his angels finally ended your pain and suffering
and said your toll had to be paid.
I don’t have any memories of you, and those are made of gold,
But I have had many dreams, and those are ones I’ve told.
Oh, Grandpa, how I love and miss you so very much,
And in my dreams you had my heart in a very gentle touch.
I know you are far from me though I feel you near,
and I just wanted to say, “Hi, Grandpa,” and I wish you were here.
Goodbye, my friend.
I shall see you again
In heaven where the stars stay.
I will be there one day.
The world isn’t the same
Since the day the angels came.
You may be on a star,
But I love you wherever you are.
My stays with you are long past.
They’re right. Fun never lasts.
We worked hard in the garden and workshop.
Side-by-side, we never stopped.
I never played with a girly toy.
I was with you, a tomboy.
You changed who I am today,
A debt I can ever repay.
Know that in my heart you’re alive
Until the day, in heaven, I arrive.
You’re in the hearts of all you touch.
We still love you very much.
